Bottle bank celebrates birthday
The first bottle bank in the UK is 30 years old. In 1977, Stanley Race made history by dropping an empty jar into the country's first glass bottle bank in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
The anniversary coincides with a government-funded national week of action, called Recycle Now, which will encourage people to recycle. Since the scheme began 23 billion jars and bottles have been recycled, with about 752,000 tonnes of glass being recycled each year.
