Landfill Tax Will Cost English Homes £30 this Year

English local authorities say throwing rubbish in landfill sites will cost the average household £30 this year. They say the imposed taxes on councils for using landfill, aimed at encouraging more recycling, should be put back into recycling facilities.

From April 2009, local councils will have to pay £40 per tonne of landfill waste. By 2010, the landfill tax will have doubled over 3 years to almost £50 a tonne.

The government tax for landfill is aimed at encouraging councils to recycle more thus sending less material to landfill.

At the current rates of use, the lanfill tax this year will cost the equivalent of £30 for every household in England, the LGA (Local Government Association) says.
