Record Numbers of Shrewsbury Residents Recycling!
SABC has conducted research, which has found that there has been a massive increase in the number of Shrewsbury households making use of the recycling and garden waste collection services.
The evidence shows that since Alternate Weekly Collections (AWC) were implemented, tens of thousands more households in Shrewsbury & Atcham have taken up using the services. As a result of this massive surge in participation, combined with an expansion of the kerbside recycling collection service into the very rural and town centre areas, recycling rates have rocketed. Almost twice as many people are now using the service and as such the amount of material collected by the kerbside recycling box service has roughly doubled!
Performance has also risen in other areas so that in excess of 43.5% of all household waste collected by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council is now being recycled or composted. We knew that AWC’s are a sure-fire way to boost recycling but the scale and pace of change has amazed us all. The results of our survey show that the participation rate for recycling and for garden waste has increased massively. This is behavioural change on an unprecedented scale. With tens of thousands of households taking part, it’s a recycling revolution. I think the people of Shrewsbury and Atcham should be proud that together we have slashed the amount of waste that has to be land filled, so that’s great news for the environment and for the local Council tax payer”.
