Shropshire's Recycling Rate rises to 47.57 percent.
Shropshire Council have reported that their residents recycled or composted 47.57% of their household waste in the year April 2008 to March 2009, against 43.5% in the previous year. This compares with the UK average for England was 37.6 per cent.
Within the Shropshire Council area, the former South Shropshire District Council had the best combined recycling and composting figure of 57.45% – the fifth best performing council in England.
In the year 2008/2009 each former district council area of Shropshire improved their performance compared to the last year. North Shropshire district residents recycled or composted 51.75% of their household waste, the former Shrewsbury & Atcham borough recorded a figure of 46.95%, the former Oswestry borough 46.14% and the former Bridgnorth district 41.7%.
In total more than 71,500 tonnes of waste produced in the Shropshire Council area in 2008/09 was sent for recycling or composting, an increase of 3,100 tonnes on the previous year. At the same time, the total amount of household waste produced in 2008/09 fell by 6,500 tonnes to 151,291 tonnes – a reduction of 4.2 per cent.
As a result, the amount of household waste being sent to landfill has reduced by 12% - or 10,000 tonnes – with just under 80,000 tonnes landfilled in 2008/09.
Donald Macphail, Managing Director of Veolia Environmental Services Shropshire – Shropshire Council’s waste contractors - offered: "As a predominantly rural county, composting accounts for a high percentage of our performance. Whilst the majority of residents use the kerbside collection service, there are still some that do not. We would therefore urge all residents to use the kerbside collection service for their paper, glass and cans which will help to further improve recycling rates in Shropshire.”
Shrewsbury residents can get free email reminders to put out their recycling, garden waste and refuse for collection at www.GreenBoxDay.co.uk. The former Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council was the first in the UK to supply their collection data to GreenBoxDay in 2007.
