Surrey County Council waste cutting strategy approved

Proposals to cut the amount of waste generated in Surrey have been approved by the county council. The plans, known as the council's waste minimisation strategy, are part of its drive to cut the 600,000 tonnes of household waste created every year.

It includes launching an education programme for schools and colleges, with the aim of tackling the problem before it reaches the next generation. There will also be a campaign focusing on reduction, re-using and recycling.

Last year, all 12 councils in Surrey signed up to a waste management strategy that agreed a 60% recycling target over the next decade.
